ACC Fencing Championships Set For This Weekend

North Carolina hosts first league fencing championship since 1980

GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the first time since 1980, the Atlantic Coast Conference will crown team and individual fencing champions this weekend. The two-day event, hosted by North Carolina, will be held at Carmichael Arena.

The action gets underway on Saturday with the men’s team competition which will run from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. The individual events will be contested started at 12 p.m.

The women will be featured on Sunday, with the three rounds of team competition starting at 7 a.m. The individual events will get underway at 11 a.m.

The ACC last held men’s fencing championships from 1971 through 1980. During that time, six league institutions sponsored the sport: Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, and Virginia. The Tar Heels, under current head coach Ron Miller, won eight of the 10 titles during the decade, with Clemson and Maryland winning the other two championships. 2015 will mark the first women’s fencing championship in league history.

The fourth-ranked Notre Dame and ninth-ranked Duke men’s squads both rank in the CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll, while North Carolina is receiving votes. On the women’s side, Notre Dame is ranked No. 2 in the country with Duke, North Carolina, and Boston College all receiving votes.

Parking will be available in the Raleigh Road Visitors Lot, Cobb Deck, and Bell Tower Deck on both Saturday and Sunday.
Entry to the event is free for all spectators.
