Louisville’s Harrell, NC State’s Martin recognized
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville junior Montrezl Harrell has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, while NC State’s Caleb Martin was selected the ACC Rookie of the Week in a vote by a select media panel.
Harrell, also named the National Player of the Week by CBSSports.com, averaged 20.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and shot 63.3 percent from the field in a pair of Louisville victories. He totaled 21 points, 11 rebounds, seven dunks and two steals against Indiana in the Jimmy V Classic as he became the Cardinals’ career dunk leader (165). The Tarboro, North Carolina, native produced his 17th career double-double and his fifth straight with 19 points, a career-high 17 rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals in Sunday night’s win over UNC Wilmington. Harrell has scored in double figures in an ACC-leading 21 consecutive games and is averaging a double-double on the season (17.0 points, 10.4 rebounds). He ranks 11th in the nation in rebounding.
The 6-foot-6 Martin made his first career start for NC State and posted career highs of 17 points and seven rebounds in an 86-50 win over Charleston Southern on Friday evening. Martin started out 6-for-7 from the floor and had 15 points at halftime. He finished 7-for-12 and made three 3-pointers. For the week, the Mocksville, North Carolina, freshman averaged 9.5 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor and 3.5 rebounds in the Wolfpack’s two games. On the season, Martin is averaging 7.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
