Miami’s McClellan named Player of Week; Duke’s Okafor again top freshman
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami junior guard Sheldon McClellan has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week, while Duke center Jahlil Okafor earned his third straight ACC Freshman of the Week honor.
McClellan hit 73.9 percent (17-of-23) from the field, 75 percent (6-of-8) from 3-point range and 100 percent (8-of-8) from the foul line in two Miami wins. The Houston native averaged 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals in 31.5 minutes per game. On the 10th day of an 11-day road trip, McClellan notched a double-double with 31 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) from the field and 5-of-7 (.714) from beyond the arc in Miami’s 77-74 win at Charlotte. In an 87-75 win over South Alabama, McClellan scored 17 points on a perfect 6-of- 6 performance from the field.
Duke’s Okafor averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game in leading Duke to home wins over Furman and Army. The Chicago native continued his offensive efficiency, going 20-of-28 (.714) from the floor for the week. Okafor recorded his first career 20-point game against Furman, finishing with 24 points to go along with seven rebounds (four offensive), three assists and two blocks. He made his final 12 shots from the field and finished 12-of-14 (.857) overall. In the win over Army, Okafor collected 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 from the free throw line. He also grabbed eight rebounds, including six offensive boards, in the win. Okafor has now scored in double figures in all seven games this season and is averaging 17.7 points per game on 63.6 percent (56-of-88) shooting.
