NC State’s Lacey, Duke’s Okafor are recognized
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State redshirt junior guard Trevor Lacey has been chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week in a vote by a select media panel, while Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor was voted the ACC Rookie of the Week.
The ACC Player of the Week honor is the first for Lacey, while Okafor was chosen the ACC Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season and the second week in a row.
Lacey scored 21 points and drilled five 3-pointers in NC State's 87-75 win over No. 2 and previously unbeaten Duke on Sunday. The Huntsville, Alabama, native shot 8-of-13 from the floor, including and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Lacey scored eight points during a 22-5 run that put the Wolfpack ahead by 19 points. Earlier in the week, Lacey connected on three shots from 3-point range in NC State’s 61-51 loss at third-ranked Virginia. For the week, he shot .615 percent from 3-point range against the Wolfpack’s two top-three ranked ACC opponents.
Okafor averaged 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds (5.0 orpg.), 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals in a pair of games for the Blue Devils. The Chicago native posted a double-double in both contests and was 12-of-17 (.706) from the field for the week. In Wednesday’s win over Wake Forest, Okafor had 12 points (on 4-of-6 shooting), 11 rebounds and one block while facing constant double teams. He followed up with 23 points, 12 rebounds (6 offensive), three blocks and three steals Sunday against NC State. Okafor was 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-11 from the foul line while recording his seventh 20-plus point game of the year.
