GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Ten Atlantic Coast Conference teams, tied for the most from a single conference in history, will be among the 64-team field when the 2016 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship gets underway with regional play on Friday.
ACC teams that are postseason bound are No. 2 Louisville, No. 3 Miami, No. 7 Clemson, Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, NC State, Virginia, and Wake Forest.
In addition to matching the NCAA record for most bids from a single conference, the 10 postseason teams tops the previous ACC record of eight, set in 2010 and 2013. The ACC has had at least seven teams in the tournament eight straight years.
The announcement also marks the seventh consecutive year that multiple league teams have been named national seeds.
Six ACC squads – Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, NC State, and Virginia – will host regionals, the most in league history. The Tigers, who earned the league’s automatic bid as the ACC champion, will open tournament play against Western Carolina. Also on Friday, the Seminoles will face Alabama State, the Cardinals take on Western Michigan, the Hurricanes play Stetson, and the Wolfpack plays Navy. The Cavaliers, the defending national champions, will start the tournament against William & Mary.
The two longest all-time tournament appearance streaks were extended this year. The Hurricanes are making their 44th consecutive regional appearance, while the Seminoles are in for the 39th straight time.
In addition to the six teams named as host sites on Sunday night, four more ACC squads earned at-large berths on Monday. Boston College earned its first bid since 2009 and will play Tulane on Friday in the Oxford Regional. Duke will play its first tournament game since 1961 when it faces UNC Wilmington in the Columbia Regional. Georgia Tech is the No. 2 seed in Gainesville Regional and will open against UConn. Wake Forest returns to the tournament for the first time since 2007 and will take on Minnesota in the College Station Regional.
2016 will be Florida State’s 54th trip to the postseason and the 45th for Miami, the second and third most, respectively, in Division I history. Clemson has the fifth-most appearances nationally with 41. Georgia Tech is making its 31st postseason appearance, followed by NC State (28), Virginia (16), Wake Forest (12), Boston College (11), Louisville (10), and Duke (6).
Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 3, to Monday, June 6 (if necessary). Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on www.NCAA.com/cws, Monday, June 6 at approximately 11 p.m. (ET).
The 70th Men’s College World Series begins play Saturday, June 18, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.
