GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s Evan Mendoza has been voted the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Connor Jones was selected as Pitcher of the Week.
ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. This is the second award this season for Jones and the first career honor for Mendoza.
Mendoza went 7 for 13 last week with six RBI and two home runs as the Wolfpack went 3-1. In a 6-1 win over East Carolina on Monday night, he drove in four runs on two hits. The sophomore third baseman from Sarasota, Florida, went 2 for 4 on Friday night in the series opener against Duke, including driving in the game-winning run on a walk-off single. In the series-clinching win on Saturday, Mendoza hit his second home run of the week and scored three times in a 12-2 NC State win.
A junior from Chesapeake, Virginia, Jones won his fourth straight start and fired his second complete game in his last four starts as Virginia won the series opener in the first game of a doubleheader at Pitt. In saving the UVA bullpen for the nightcap of the doubleheader, he carried a one-hitter into the ninth inning, allowing just an infield single and two walks while Pitt hit only three balls out of the infield. Jones also won the battle of aces against Pitt’s T.J. Zeuch as UVA handed Zeuch his first loss of the season.
