ACC Announces Women’s Soccer Players of the Week

Florida State’s Miller and Miami’s Lachowecki honored

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( – Miami senior Gracie Lachowecki is this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Florida State redshirt junior Cassie Miller has been named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

These are the second honors of the season for both players as Miller collected the defensive award on Aug. 23 and Lacheowecki earned the offensive honor on Sept. 27.

Lachowecki totaled six points on two goals and two assists in a 2-0 week for the Hurricanes, which included a 3-0 win over Louisville and a 2-1 overtime win against No. 25/25 Virginia Tech. The Evansville, Indiana native played a role in two of Miami’s three goals against the Cardinals as she registered a pair of assists in the victory. Three days later against the Hokies she scored both goals in the come-back win - the equalizer in the 85th minute and the golden goal in the 102nd minute. With the wins Miami, which was picked last in the preseason ACC coaches poll, clinched a top-seven league finish and its first ACC Championship berth since 2012.

Miller helped the Seminoles to a perfect weekend, shutting out No. 4/6 Duke (1-0) in overtime and Louisville (1-0) at home to extend FSU’s home unbeaten streak to 32 matches. Against the high-powered Duke offense that led the ACC in scoring in conference games entering the weekend, Miller and the Seminoles kept the Blue Devils from scoring for just the third time this season. The Cave Creek, Arizona, native made a save on Christina Gibbons’ PK attempt in the 85th minute and also made a leaping save in the 90th minute, blocking the ball up into the crossbar and saving the follow-up shot to force overtime. Against the Cardinals, she saved all three shots on goal for the game as Louisville was held without a shot for the final 55:33 of the match.

The regular season will come to a close on Thursday, Oct. 27 with seven league matches. The seeds for the 2016 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship will be announced Thursday evening following the outcomes of the seven matches. Championship quarterfinals will take place on campuses of the top four seeds on Sunday, Oct. 30.
