North Carolina, Syracuse share Pitcher of the Week honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s Brittany Pickett and Syracuse’s Alexa Romero have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Pitchers of the Week and the Orange’s Faith Cain earned Player of the Week honors.
Pickett led the Tar Heels to a perfect 4-0 week which included a series sweep over conference foe Boston College. The freshman recorded a 0.56 ERA, allowing two earned runs over 25 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts and two complete-game shutouts. Pickett improves to 20-2 on the season which ties for the best record in the conference and a .909 winning percentage.
Romero led the Orange from the pitcher’s circle for the five-game road sweep of Canisius and Pittsburgh. She tallied a career-high 12 strikeouts in game one against the Panthers, while earning her first career save in game two. The freshman threw a pair of shutouts and pitched three complete games in four outings, allowing just three runs. She leads Syracuse in strikeouts on the year with 116, and improved her record to 10-6 with an ERA of 2.54.
Cain led the Orange offensively with a .526 batting average over the five-game road win stretch. The junior had a perfect game in the series finale over Pittsburgh, as she hit 4-for-4 from home plate with a pair of doubles and three RBI. She went yard twice in five games while striking out just three times.
