ACC Announces Basketball Players of the Week

Virginia’s Gill, Virginia Tech’s Blackshear honored

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia senior Anthony Gill has been voted the Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week after leading the 10th-ranked Cavaliers to a win over 14th-ranked West Virginia at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Joining Gill as a weekly honoree is Virginia Tech’s Kerry Blackshear Jr., who was selected the conference’s Rookie of the Week. ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel.

Gill posted season highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds for his fourth career double-double as Virginia downed the Mountaineers by a 70-54 score last Tuesday evening in the Jimmy V Classic. The High Point, North Carolina, native went 9-of-11 from the field in reaching double figures for the ninth time in as many games this season.

Blackshear put together his two best games of the season in a road win over Radford and a homecourt win over Lamar. In the 74-65 victory at Radford on Wednesday night, Blackshear scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a career-high 32 minutes of action. The Orlando, Florida, native was 6-of-9 from the field. In Sunday’s 88-53 win over Lamar, Blackshear recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. He was 5-of-8 from the floor.
