Hokies, Seminoles swept ACC matchups
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech junior catcher Mark Zagunis and Florida State junior pitcher Luke Weaver have been named the ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday.
Zagunis helped the Hokies sweep Pitt as he batted .400 in the series with four runs and six RBIs. On the week, he hit .500 while scoring 10 runs and driving in eight. He posted a .607 on-base percentage for the week and slugged a team-high .682.
In the second game of the series against the Panthers, the Cinnaminson, N.J., native connected on a three-run home run to help Virginia Tech come from eight runs down to win, 11-10. In the series finale, he hit a bases-loaded RBI single in the third inning to spark a seven-run frame. It was the first sweep in an ACC home opening series in Hokies history, and the first time they scored at least 10 runs in all three games of a conference series since 1994.
Weaver went toe to toe with NC State’s Carlos Rodon in the opening game of the three-game series, a 6-1 victory for the Seminoles over the seventh-ranked Wolfpack. Weaver picked up his fourth win in his fifth start of the season, working 6.1 innings on Friday night.
The DeLand, Fla., native gave up just one run on seven hits as he walked two and struck out seven. After striking out the side in the top of the first inning, the junior retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced.
