North Carolina’s Diamond DeShields receives third ACC Rookie of the Week honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest junior guard Dearica Hamby has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman guard Diamond DeShields has been tabbed the ACC Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Hamby averaged 24.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Demon Deacons, which included a pair of road wins at Clemson and Boston College. The Marietta, Ga., native began the week with a 29-point, 18-rebound and four block effort at Clemson. She recorded 22 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to North Carolina, before finishing the week with 21 points, 16 rebounds and four assists at Boston College. Against the Eagles, Hamby made four free throws in the final 47 seconds to seal the win for the Demon Deacons.
Hamby has registered a double-double in each of the last five games and owns 16 for the season.
DeShields, a former teammate of Hamby’s at Norcross High School in Norcross, Ga., scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and came up with three steals in leading North Carolina to an 83-65 win at Wake Forest in the Tar Heels’ only game last week.
DeShields leads all freshmen in ACC games with 18.8 points and ranks third among all league rookies with 6.2 rebounds per game. It is DeShields third Rookie of the Week honor as she earned the honor on Dec. 2 and Jan. 13.
