Virginia’s Pannell and Duke’s Carroll Named @ACCMLAX Players of the Week

Presented by HavolineGREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia sophomore attackman James Pannell and Duke redshirt senior defenseman Casey Carroll have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the week, as announced Tuesday by the conference.

Pannell led No. 7/8 Virginia to a pair of wins last week, including a 14-13 overtime victory over No. 12/16 Loyola (Md.) on Feb. 6. The Smithtown, N.Y., native totaled 10 points on the week on eight goals and two assists.

Against Loyola, Pannell registered a game-high four goals and one assist, including the game winner in overtime. Pannell set up Ryan Tucker’s equalizer that was scored with one-tenths of a second left in regulation before securing the Cavaliers’ first win of the season with 2:16 left in overtime. Pannell followed that performance up with four goals and an assist against the Spiders, while scoring the Cavaliers’ final two goals, to break an 11-11 tie and solidify the victory.

Carroll, who played in his first game since May 27, 2007 after serving in the 3rd BN 75th Ranger Regiment of the U.S. Army, started for Duke’s close defense in a 16-10 victory over Jacksonville. Carroll recorded three caused turnovers and five ground balls, as he helped Duke force 21 Jacksonville turnovers en route to the season-opening win. His five ground balls were the most by a non-faceoff specialist.

ACC men’s lacrosse action continues Saturday, Feb. 15 with four nonconference games.
