Cavaliers’ Junior Captured 165-pound Title at Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia junior Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance earlier this month in capturing the 165-pound title at the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 7 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Sulzer, ranked third nationally, became the first-ever champion for Virginia at the prestigious Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational. In winning four matches, he defeated a pair of nationally-ranked foes in 7th-ranked Mike Moreno of Iowa State (5-2) and 9th-ranked Daniel Yates of Michigan (10-3).
Sulzer boosted his record to 13-0 on the season, also defeating Joe Grandomonico of Ohio State (5-2) and Nebraska’s Austin Wilson (15-3) in sweeping to the tournament championship. He has scored bonus points in 10 of his 13 matches this season.
His win over Iowa State’s Moreno in the Las Vegas title match avenged a loss in last year’s All-America round of the 2013 NCAA Championships.
In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Sulzer was chosen over a pair of sterling performances from Maryland senior Jimmy Sheptock (Northhampton, Pa.), who defeated two top 10 foes at 184 pounds, and NC State sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.), who won six of seven matches in the 285-pound weight class, with the only loss to a nationally-ranked opponent.
The 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships will be held March 8 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
