Cavalier Junior Captures League Honor for the Second Time in Three Weeks
GREENSBORO, N.C. –Virginia junior Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time in three weeks for his performance in leading the Cavaliers to their first team championship in the Virginia Duals this past Friday and Saturday in Hampton, Va.
Sulzer won three straight matches in the 165-pound weight class, including an 11-5 decision over Corey Mock of UT-Chattanooga, the nation’s 4th-ranked wrestler in the 165-poumd class. The loss was Mock’s first this year
Ranked second in the most recent Intermat national rankings, Sulzer improved his individual record this year to 22-1. His win over Mock on Friday was key in UVa’s five-point, 18-13 team win over the Moccasins. Sulzer then scored bonus points off of major decisions in both of his Saturday bouts. In the championship match, he defeated Edinboro’s Zach Towers in a 17-4 major decision; the bonus point from that match was critical in UVa’s one-point, 20-19 team victory for the championship.
The Cavaliers, who are ranked 13th nationally, improved to 11-2 overall
Sulzer was named initial 2013-14 ACC Wrestler of the Week on December 18 after capturing the individual championship at 165 pounds at the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Sulzer was chosen over strong performances from Duke 197-pound sophomore Connor Hartman (Port Orchard, Wash.); Maryland 184-pound senior Jimmy Sheptock (Northampton, Pa.); North Carolina 141-pound junior Evan Henderson (New Florence, Pa.); NC State 157-pound junior Tommy Gantt (Cahokia, Ill.); Pitt 174-pound junior Tyler Wilps (Oakdale, Pa.); and Virginia Tech 157-pound freshman Sal Mastriani ( Towaco, N.J.).
