Virginia’s Joe Spisak Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

Cavalier Junior Defeats A Pair of Top 25 Foes, Including Win Over 4th-Ranked Evan Henderson

GREENSBORO, N.C.-–Virginia redshirt junior Joe Spisak (Boiling Springs, Pa.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday for his performance in winning a pair of matches against nationally-ranked opponents and helping 12th-ranked Virginia to team victories over North Carolina and NC State.

Spisak, wrestling at 141 pounds, defeated Evan Henderson of North Carolina, who is ranked fourth nationally, by a score of 4-0 in leading UVa to a 21-9 triumph over the Tar Heels. The loss was only the fourth of the year for Henderson, who earned All-America honors last year at the NCAA Championships. Spisak built up 3:19 in riding time in the decisive win as he defeated a returning All-America for the third time this year.

Two days later on Sunday, Spisak then defeated 25th-ranked Sam Speno of NC State, 3-1, to key a 22-10 Cavalier victory.

With the impressive wins, Spisak improved to 18-10 overall on the year, 11-7 in duals and 4-6 against top 20 opponents. Virginia improved to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the ACC.

In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Spisak was chosen over strong performances from Maryland’s 197-pound senior Christian Boley (Brockport, N.Y.), Duke 157-pound junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown (Rome, Ga.) and Pitt 197-pound sophomore Nick Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park, Pa.).
