NASHVILLE, Tenn. - North Carolina guard Diamond DeShields was honored on Sunday as the USBWA National Freshman of the Year, announced at the Bridgestone Arena, prior to the Women's Final Four.
The Norcross, Ga., product led Carolina to a 27-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 this season. DeShields averaged 18.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game, displaying her talents all season long as one of the best players in the game.
DeShields set four ACC freshman single-season records this season: total points (648), fields goals made (248), field goals attempted (582) and double figure scoring games (32).
Already named the top freshman nationally by espnW and Full Court, DeShields is the only first-year player listed on the John R. Wooden Award Top-15 list in 2014.
She was named an AP All-America Honorable Mention last week. DeShields was named a first team all-league selection and the ACC Rookie of the Year back in March.
