Thomas earns her league-leading eighth career player of the week nod
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Maryland senior forward Alyssa Thomas and North Carolina freshman guard Allisha Gray have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Thomas was the driving force as No. 8/7 Maryland went toe-to-toe with No. 1/1 Connecticut through the majority of their match-up in College Park, Md., on Nov. 15. Thomas started hot from the opening tip, scoring the Terrapins’ first seven points. The Harrisburg, Pa., native finished the game with a team-high 20 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and pulled down 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
The Player of the Week honor is Thomas’ eighth in her career.
Gray came off the bench to average 22.5 points and 10 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Tar Heels. The Sandersonville, Ga., native registered 30 points and 10 rebounds in No. 12/14 North Carolina’s 78-68 win at UCLA on Nov. 17, to become the first UNC freshman to score 30 points in a game since Ivory Latta in 2003-04. Gray made 8-of-16 of her field goal attempts, including six 3-poiners.
Gray scored a team-leading 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Tar Heels’ loss to No. 4/3 Tennessee on Nov. 11.
