North Carolina Falls To No. 6 Gamecocks, 27-10

COLUMBIA, S.C. ( --- Mike Davis rushed for 115 yards and a 75-yard third-quarter touchdown as No. 6 South Carolina topped North Carolina, 27-10, Thursday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. Shaq Roland scored on a 65-yard catch on the first drive of the game to give the Gamecocks a lead they would never relinquish.

Bryn Renner completed 26 of 43 passes for 194 yards and a score for the Tar Heels, and Romar Morris rushed for 69 yards on 15 carries in his first career start.

After Connor Shaw hit Roland down the middle for the opening score on the third play from scrimmage, Elliott Fry made a 39-yard field goal and Dylan Thompson connected with Kane Whitehurst for a 29-yard score to make it 17-0 before the end of the first quarter.

But Renner and the Tar Heels responded, as the senior quarterback engineered a 16-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a 4-yard touchdown pass to Quinshad Davis. Davis, playing in his home state for the first time in his career, caught four balls for 39 yards and a score.

Fry tacked on another field goal with 1:32 left in the half to make it 20-7 at the break before the Tar Heels put together another long drive to open the third.

Carolina converted a pair of fourth downs, including a 4th-and-11, in a 17-play, 67-yard drive, but Renner couldn't connect with A.J. Blue on 3rd-and-goal and Thomas Moore made a 20-yard field goal to pull the Tar Heels within 10.

The momentum of a second long drive was short-lived, however, as Davis found a seam and raced down the sideline for the longest rushing play against UNC in five years.

James Hurst and the Tar Heel offensive line largely neutralized Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina's much-ballyhooed defensive line star. Clowney finished with three tackles and no sacks.

The game was delayed for one hour and 44 minutes with 8:20 left in the fourth quarter due to lightning in the area.

Carolina returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 7, as the Tar Heels host Middle Tennessee at 12:30 in the 2013 home opener.
