GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina senior forward Kealia Ohai and Virginia sophomore defender Emily Sonnett have been named the ACC Women’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league office. The honor is the first in both Ohai’s and Sonnett’s careers.
Sonnett led top-ranked Virginia to a pair of wins over Miami and No. 3/3 Florida State, which gave the Cavaliers the No. 1 seed in the 2013 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship. The Marietta, Ga., native anchored a defense that posted back-to-back shutouts and allowed just four total shots. Sonnett tallied a career-high two assists in a 4-0 win over the Hurricanes on Oct. 24. Three days later, Sonnett led the Cavalier defense that allowed FSU, which entered the game averaging 15.72 shots per game, just one shot for the 91-minute contest.
Ohai scored a goal in each game last week for the Tar Heels, who secured a top 4 seed in the upcoming ACC Women’s Soccer Championship. Ohai provided the insurance goal in a 2-0 defeat of Clemson, and struck for the game-winner the 97:14 mark in North Carolina’s win at No. 19/22 Wake Forest. The win over the Demon Deacons marked the first for UNC since the 2010 season.
