Six Golfers From ACC Programs Set For TOUR Championship

The 2013 FedExCup wraps up this weekend in Atlanta, Ga.

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( – Six golfers from current ACC schools will tee of Thursday as part of the 2013 TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, the final event of the 2013 FedExCup. The field of 30 golfers will compete at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga.

The FedExCup, now in its seventh year, is a season-long points competition culminating in the PGA TOUR's first-ever Playoff system. The FedExCup winner earns the top prize of $10 million, which Wake Forest’s Bill Haas took home in 2011.

The six golfers from league programs are double the number from any other conference, with the Big 12, Big Ten, Mountain West, Pac-12, and SEC all with three apiece. Three schools have multiple former golfers in the 30-person field: Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, and Illinois.

The Yellow Jackets are Matt Kuchar and Roberto Castro, while the Demon Deacons are Haas and Webb Simpson. They will be joined by Duke’s Kevin Streelman and Virginia Tech’s Brendon de Jonge.

Kuchar is the highest-ranked golfer in the standings from the ACC at No. 5. He is followed by Haas at No. 18, No. 19 Streelman, No. 21 Simpson, No. 24 Castro, and No. 27 de Jonge. Because of his spot in the top five, Kuchar controls his own destiny and would win the FedExCup with a TOUR Championship victory.

As part of the second pairing, de Jonge will start play on Thursday at 11:50 a.m. Castro (12:10 p.m.), Simpson (12:20 p.m.), Streelman (12:30 p.m.), and Haas (12:40 p.m.) will start midday, while Kuchar hits the course at 1:40 p.m.
