U-20 Women’s World Cup to run Aug. 5-24 in Canada

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seven Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer players are among the 21 players named to the United States Under-23 Women’s National Team roster for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, as announced by head coach Michelle French.

The ACC representatives on the roster are Boston College forward McKenzie Meehan, Duke defender Christina Gibbons, Florida State midfielder Nickolette Driesse , North Carolina forward Summer Green, Notre Dame defenders Katie Naughton and Cari Roccaro and Virginia forward Makenzy Doniak.

French named her squad after the first week of a two-week training camp in Seattle, Washington, which will be the last domestic event for the U.S. team before it leaves for Canada in late July. French put her player pool through a thorough evaluation process over the past year and a half, taking a hard look at almost 80 players in training camps and games.
Roccaro is one of two players who were a part of the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Japan. The U.S. co-captain leads the roster in U-20 caps with 30 and played every minute of the three knockout matches two years ago.

The 2014 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, being held in Edmonton, Montreal, Moncton and Toronto, Canada, will take place Aug. 5-24. All three of the USA’s group games will be broadcast live across the ESPN platforms. The U.S. plays its first two Group B matches at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, opening its tournament on Aug. 5 against Germany at 5 p.m. local (7 p.m. ET on ESPNU and WatchESPN) before facing Brazil on Aug. 8 at 8 p.m. local (10 p.m. ET on ESPNU and WatchESPN). The USA will finish group play on Aug. 12 against China PR at Moncton Stadium with a kickoff at 5 p.m. local (4 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and WatchESPN).
