Defending national champion North Carolina ranked No. 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Seven Atlantic Coast Conference women’s lacrosse teams – more than twice as many as from any other league – are ranked in Lacrosse Magazine’s preseason rankings.
North Carolina, which won its first national championship in 2013, will enter this season with the No. 1 ranking. The Maryland Terrapins, who also reached the national championship game last year, hold the No. 2 spot.
League newcomer Syracuse joined the Tar Heels and Terrapins in the 2013 national semifinals and is No. 3 entering the 2014 campaign. No. 6 Duke and No. 7 Virginia also hold sports in the top 10, while No. 11 Notre Dame and No. 20 Boston College round out the league representatives in the preseason poll.
Also receiving recognition from Lacrosse Magazine was Syracuse’s Alyssa Murray, who was named the publication’s preseason player of the year. The junior attacker tallied 104 points and was named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award last season.
Seven current ACC teams earned NCAA Tournament bids last year, and three advanced to the semifinals. North Carolina’s title was the eighth by an ACC team in the 17 years as a league-sponsored sport, and the conference has sent 16 teams to the national championship game during that time.
