Panther Junior Downs 12th-ranked Stephen Doty in Pitt’s 25-9 win over 13th-Ranked Cavaliers
GREENSBORO, N.C. -– Pitt redshirt junior Tyler Wilps (Oakdale, Pa.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday for his performance in leading the Panthers to an important ACC wrestling win over 13th-ranked Virginia last Friday in Pittsburgh.
The win for the 8th-ranked Panthers puts Pitt in the driver’s seat for the regular season race in the Conference. Pitt now has a 4-0 ACC record, having defeated 17th-ranked Virginia Tech, Maryland, Duke and the 13th-ranked Cavaliers.
Though the team score between the two schools was decisive, seven of the individual matches were decided by just one or two points. Pitt entered the 174-pound match leading by only a 12-9 margin, as Virginia won both the 157- and 167-pound competitions prior to into the 174-pound bout.
Wilps, ranked 7th nationally at 174 pounds, recorded a major decision, winning 12-4 over 12th-ranked Steven Doty of Virginia to give the Panthers a 16-9 lead and the momentum to win the final three matches of the day.
Pitt improved to 10-1 and 4-0 in the ACC with its only dual match loss coming at No. 1-ranked Penn State.
With the win, Wilps improves to 21-5 on the season, including a 9-2 record in dual matches and a 13-0 mark in bonus point matches.
In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Wilps was chosen over strong performances from Duke 157-pound junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown (Rome, Ga.); NC State 285-pound sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.) and Virginia Tech 133-pound freshman Dennis Gustafson (Woodbridge, Va.).
The 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships will be held March 8 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
