Pitt’s P.J. Tasser Named ACC Wrestler of the Week


Panther Senior Scores Match-Deciding Victory in Pitt’s Upset Win Over 5th-Ranked Oklahoma State

GREENSBORO, N.C.-–Pitt senior  P.J. Tasser (Belle Vernon, Pa.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance  in leading the Panthers to a dramatic upset win over 5th-ranked Oklahoma State Sunday in Pittsburgh.

The win for the Panthers against the 5th-ranked Cowboys marks the highest-ranked recorded wrestling opponent that Pitt has defeated in a dual match.

Tasser gave away nearly 50 pounds to wrestle in the heavyweight match against 14th-ranked Austin Marsden of Oklahoma State. Tasser scored a 3-1 win in the first sudden death period of overtime, which tied the match at 18-all, and allowed the Panthers to win, 19-18, on criteria.

Pitt, which entered the match ranked 13th nationally, improved to 9-1 on the year with its only dual match loss coming to No. 1-ranked Penn State.

With the win Tasser improves to 12-5 on the season, including a 6-3 record in dual meatches and 2-1 in overtime.

In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Tasser was chosen over strong performances from North Carolina 141-pound junior Evan Henderson (New Florence, Pa.); Virginia’s 197-pound sophomore Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.)  and Virginia Tech 197-pound senior Chris Penny ( Virginia Beach, Va.).

The 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships will be held March 8 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
