Maryland’s Shatori Walker-Kimbrough receives second straight ACC Rookie of the Week honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Pitt junior guard Brianna Kiesel has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Maryland freshman guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough has been tabbed the ACC Rookie of the Week honor for the second consecutive week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Kiesel averaged 23 points and seven assists while shooting 53.6 percent from the floor in two ACC games last week, which included a 79-75 win at Virginia on Jan. 5. Kiesel scored 20 points and dished out seven assists in Pitt’s ACC opener against Florida State. Three days later, the Utica, N.Y., native led Pitt to its first ACC victory at Virginia, while scoring a game-high 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting and making all nine of her free throw attempts. She also added seven assists and three steals in 40 minutes of action.
Kiesel has scored 20-plus points in three straight games and in four of her last five.
Walker-Kimbrough came off the bench and immediately made an impact for the Terrapins in their 79-70 win at No. 10/11 North Carolina on Sunday. The rookie scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half and finished the game with a career-high seven rebounds. The Aliquippa, Pa., native shot 54.5 percent from the floor, and made a clutch 3-pointer in the first half to give Maryland a four-point lead, 21-17, with 10:23 left in the half after UNC took a brief lead.
ACC women’s basketball action continues on Wednesday, Jan. 8 as Clemson hosts Georgia Tech. Twelve teams will be in action on Thursday, Jan. 9.
