Pitt’s Palmer and Miami’s Wimbley earn weekly honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – A pair of freshmen were recognized on Tuesday as Pitt’s Desmond Palmer has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Week, while Miami’s Shakima Wimbley earned Women’s Performer of the Week honors.

Palmer stood out for the Pitt men as the overall champion in the IC4A 400 meter hurdles with a new personal best run of 51.50 seconds. Adding to the overall score for Pitt men, the 4x400 meter relay team of Micah Murray, Palmer, Dustin Fuller and Brycen Spratling turned in a fifth place performance in the finals. Palmer, of Pinkerington, Ohio, saw his championship performance and effort in the relays aid in the Pitt men’s team’s historical win. After 74 years, Pitt was crowned the 2014 IC4A Championship with a total of 51 points. The Panthers had last recorded an IC4A team Championship in 1940.

Miami’s Wimbley was the top finisher in a field of 45 athletes competing in the women’s 400m at the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, freshman posted a personal-best time of 51.68 seconds that ranks second in Miami history and leads the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. Wimbley’s time currently ranks eighth in the country and second in the East Region.
