Wake Forest’s Ionata and Callahan honored as outdoor season gets under way
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest freshman throwers Charlie Ionata and Casidy Callahan have been honored as the first Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Performers of the Week of the 2014 season following last weekend’s opening meets.
Ionata continued to perform well following his successful indoor season. Ionata’s throw of 61.30m in the hammer shattered the Wake Forest school record of 59.38m previously held by Cliff Neal (2002). The throw allowed Ionata to place second among a field of 39 participants at the CCU Invitational. Ionata, of Barrington, R.I., added an eighth-place finish in the javelin event among a field of 43 participants with a mark of 53.98m.
Callahan also competed in the CCU Invitational, where she captured second-place finishes in both the women’s hammer throw (50.25) and in the discus (45.03m) with marks nearing current Wake Forest outdoor school records. Both events in which the Doraville, Ga., native participated featured 58 entrants.
With ACC student-athletes having earned three individual titles and 84 All-America honors at last week’s NCAA Indoor Championships, the outdoor season begins in full this weekend, as conference teams begin gearing for the ACC Outdoor Meet, set for April 17-19 at Chapel Hill, N.C.
