Duo leads ND to highest road win in school history
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Notre Dame freshman attacker/midfielder Cortney Fortunato and junior goalie Allie Murray have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference.
Fortunato shined in a 2-0 week for the Fighting Irish as she posted a pair of hat tricks in wins at No. 4 Northwestern (9-8) and versus Louisville (12-9). Against the Wildcats, the Northport, N.Y., native scored just 11 seconds into the game, setting a tone for the night. She also scored the critical game-tying goal with 2:21 to play, knotting the score at 8-8. The win at Northwestern is the Irish’s highest ranked road win in program history, while NU’s home loss is just the fourth in 105 home games since 2004.
Fortunato followed her three-goal performance with another hat trick against the Cardinals, with two of her three goals coming in the second half following a 7-4 halftime deficit. She had two key draw controls, both of which led to Irish goals.
Murray backstopped Notre Dame in its upset at Northwestern, while making nine saves. Notre Dame’s eight goals allowed marked only the fourth time since 2006 NU has been held to eight or fewer goals on its home field. Murray saved five of Northwestern’s eight free position shots, including one with 0:36 left to play that secured the victory.
Murray played the first half of Notre Dame’s 12-9 win over Louisville. She made five saves and collected four ground balls in the triumph.
ACC women’s lacrosse action continues today with Notre Dame playing at Richmond.
