10th-Ranked Irish Capture Dale England Cup; Defeat 13th-ranked Indiana, Rhode Island, Alabama
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Notre Dame’s First Varsity Eight crew has been honored as the ACC Crew of the Week after leading the Irish to the Dale England Cup by recording the fastest time in the Atlantic Coast Conference this spring, a 6:17.90 clocking in defeating 13th-ranked Indiana on Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Ind.
In all, the Irish First Varsity Eight was unbeaten in three races, also defeating Rhode Island and Alabama in their final competition before the ACC Rowing Championships, which will be held May 16-17 on Lake Hartwell, S.C.
The Notre Dame First Varsity Eight is composed of senior coxswain Christina Dines (Buffalo, N.Y.), senior Teresa Rubinger (Arlington, Va.), freshman Hilary Shinnick (Kildorrey, County Cork, Ireland), junior Anna Kottkamp (Wenatchee, Wash.), junior Ailish Sheehan (Kildaire County, Limerick, Ireland), junior Erin Boxberger (Overland Park, Kansas), senior Molly Bruggeman (Dayton, Ohio), senior Courtney Gaberino (Pewaukee, Wis.) and sophomore Joanna Mulvey (Staatsburg, N.Y.).
Notre Dame began the weekend with a near seven-second win over host Indiana (6:23.20) on Friday night on rough waters caused by a strong tail wind. Open water victories on Saturday followed for the Irish in the morning session, as Notre Dame posted a time of 6:26.60 to defeat Alabama (6:58.10), and a 6:20.00 mark to defeat Rhode Island (6:39.80) in the afternoon session.
The win marked the second straight year Notre Dame, coached by Martin Stone, has captured the Dale England Cup. This week’s ACC Crew of the Week honor is the first for Notre Dame since joining the ACC.
The Irish beat out a strong performance by the Virginia Second Varsity Eight, which posted a season’s best 6:32.7 clocking in defeating Syracuse last weekend at the UVa Invitational on Lake Monticello outside of Charlottesville, Va.; and the Duke Third Varsity Eight Crew, which posted a season’s best time of 6:59.5, also at the UVa Invitational.
The 2014 ACC Rowing Championship will be held May 16-17, on Lake Hartwell. Heats will be held beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 16, with the Petite and Grand Finals starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 17.
