Wolfpack Sophomore Records Decision Over Nation’s Top-Ranked Heavyweight
GREENSBORO, N.C.—NC State sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday for his performance in winning a pair of matches last week, including a decision over Northwestern’s Michael McMullan, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds.
Gwiazdowski, ranked 6th nationally last week, posted a 5-3 overtime decision over McMullan as State dropped a 24-15 decision to the 21st-ranked Wildcats in Durham, N.C. McMullan is a two-time All-American who finished second nationally last year at the NCAA Championships. Gwiazdowski also recorded a pin of Duke’s Brendan Walsh in 2:25 of their match in leading NC State to a 25-13 ACC win over the Blue Devils.
Gwiazdowski finished the dual meet season with a 20-0 mark, including 6-0 in ACC matches. In those six conference matches, he won two by fall and three by major decision. Six of his last eight victories have come against nationally ranked opponents. His overall record this year is 35-2.
In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Gwiazdowski was chosen over strong performances from North Carolina 125-pound sophomore Nathan Kraisser (Ellicott City, Md.) and Duke 197-pound sophomore Connor Hartmann (Port Orchard, Wash). Kraisser scored a decision over Pitt’s Anthony Zanetta, who is ranked 16th nationally, while Hartmann defeated Alex Polizzi of Northwestern, the nation’s 13th-ranked wrestler.
