Maryland duo helps Terps to a pair of top-10 wins
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland junior midfielder Kelly McPartland has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while junior defender Megan Douty and Syracuse senior goalkeeper Alyssa Costantino share ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors, as announced Tuesday by the conference.
McPartland and Douty led No. 2 Maryland to two top-10 wins on the week with a victory at No. 3 Syracuse (12-10) on March 10 and a triumph over No. 8 Notre Dame (16-10) on March 15.
McPartland, who boasts 36 points in 2014 for the unbeaten Terps, racked up five points on three goals and two assists to lead Maryland to a 12-10 victory against the Orange in a rematch of last season’s national semifinal. McPartland followed up that performance with a hat trick against Notre Dame Saturday to help Maryland pick up its ninth win of the season.
Douty anchored Maryland’s defense in both wins last week. Against the Orange, Douty limited Syracuse’s top scorer Kayla Treanor to two goals in the run of play and scooped up a game-high three ground balls. It was the lowest scoring output for Syracuse in 2014. The Fair Haven, N.J., native recorded a ground ball and a draw control as Maryland topped Notre Dame, and held its ninth straight opponent to 10 or fewer goals in 2014.
Syracuse’s Costantino played all 60 minutes and registered eight saves to earn a victory over No. 4/4 Florida in her first start of the season on March 15. Costantino and the Syracuse defense shut out the Gators for the final 14:00 of the first half as the Orange broke a 3-3 tie and led 8-3 at halftime. Syracuse held Florida’s Shannon Gilroy, the nation’s second-leading scorer, to just three goals.
ACC women’s lacrosse action continues today with Syracuse hosting Harvard.
