Maryland’s Witmer Named ACC Field Hockey Player Of The Week

Senior forward scores twice in 2-1 overtime win over No. 3 North Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland senior forward Jill Witmer has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week after scoring both goals in the top-ranked Terrapins’ 2-1 overtime win at third-ranked North Carolina on Saturday.

Witmer had missed the previous three games while playing with the U.S. National Team in the Pan America games, but returned just in time to provide the Terrapins with the edge in a matchup of programs that have combined to win seven of the last eight NCAA titles.

With Maryland trailing 1-0 in Saturday’s match, Terrapins head coach Missy Meharg used her timeout with 9:22 remaining in regulation. Just a shade over two minutes later, Witmer deflected in Mieke Hayn’s shot to tie the game.

Witmer struck again for the game-winner in the 7-on-7 overtime period. Maryland’s Ali McEvoy made a defensive stop and got the ball to Witmer, and the Lancaster, Pa., native raced up the field and slung a backhanded shot into the net for the win.
