Florida State Volleyball Tabbed Unanimous Preseason Favorite

Noles look for third consecutive title

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State, which is looking to become the Atlantic Coast Conference’s first team to win three consecutive volleyball league titles since North Carolina completed the feat from 1999-2001, was tabbed as the unanimous preseason favorite in a vote by the league’s 15 head coaches.

The Seminoles accumulated the maximum possible point total of 196. First-place votes were awarded 14 points, second place received 13 points, etc. Coaches were not allowed to include their own team in their predicted order of finish.

North Carolina picked up 178 points for second place, while Miami (169), Notre Dame (153) and NC State (133) rounded out the top five. Duke’s 126 points placed it ahead of Virginia Tech (122), Clemson (109), Georgia Tech (82) and Maryland (81). Virginia (64), Syracuse (51), Pitt (49), Boston College (33) and Wake Forest (29) completed the poll.

A total of 10 teams were represented on the 2013 Preseason All-ACC Team. Miami led all conference schools with four selections, followed by Duke, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina and Notre Dame with two selections apiece.

Eight of the 18 selections were voted to the 2012 All-ACC Team, while four were part of the 2012 All-ACC Freshmen Team. In addition, the squad features returning AVCA Third Team All-Americans Ashley Neff of Florida State and Emani Sims of Miami, along with seven others that were named Honorable Mention All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Florida State returns five starters from last year’s team that earned a 28-4 overall record and an 18-2 mark in league play. The Seminoles were defeated by Purdue in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship.

The 2013 season gets under way on Friday, August 30, with 14 of the conference’s teams in action. The 2013 ACC volleyball champion will be determined by the final regular season standings, with that team receiving an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship.
