GT’s Kaela Davis receives fourth ACC Rookie of the Week honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State senior forward Natasha Howard has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Georgia Tech freshman guard Kaela Davis has been tabbed the ACC Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Howard averaged 33.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and shot 64.1 percent from the field in a 1-1 week for Florida State.
Howard posted a 34-point, eight-rebound performance against Georgia Tech, and followed up with 33 points and 11 rebounds in a win over Virginia for her 13th double-double of the season. Her 11 rebounds also helped her top 1,000 rebounds for her career, becoming just third Seminole to reach the mark. Howard’s 13 double-doubles for the season are a Florida State single-season record.
The Toledo, Ohio, native leads the ACC in scoring in league games with 23.3 points per game.
Davis averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while helping Georgia Tech to back-to-back wins. The Suwanee, Ga., native began the week with 18 points and five rebounds against Florida State, and poured in 22 points in the Yellow Jackets’ regular-season finale against Boston College.
Davis, who has earned four ACC Rookie of the Week honors, is six points shy of breaking Karen Lounsbury’s single-season freshman scoring record (539).
All 15 league teams will participate in the 2014 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament March 5-9 at the Greensboro Coliseum. First round games will be played on Wednesday, March 5 at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.
