North Carolina’s Friend, Ward recognized following win over No. 4 Florida
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina’s Abbey Friend was named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week of the 2014 season, while UNC teammate Megan Ward earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors following the defending NCAA champion Tar Heels’ dominating 20-8 win over fourth-ranked Florida.
Friend led UNC on the attack and tied for game-high honors with five goals, two assists and seven points in the victory over the Gators. The Canandaigua, N.Y., senior’s effort in Saturday afternoon’s contest included the game-winning goal.
Ward, a sophomore goalkeeper from Annapolis, Md., went the distance in the cage for the Tar Heels, picking up where she left off in last year’s NCAA championship run by making a number of big plays. Ward made nine saves and gathered two ground balls, limiting the Gators (who averaged nearly 15 goals per game last season) to just eight goals.
ACC women’s lacrosse action resumes Wednesday night at 6 p.m., when Notre Dame is scheduled to play host to Cincinnati in a nonconference match.
