UNC’s Mavunga receives ACC Rookie of the Week honor following her role in two wins
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke senior guard Chelsea Gray has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman forward Stephanie Mavunga earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Gray received her second Player of the Week honor of the season following her strong showings against quality opponents Vanderbilt and Marquette, which owned a combined 7-1 record entering their games versus the Blue Devils. Gray missed two triple-doubles by only three rebounds as she averaged 13.0 poitns, 12.5 assists, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals. Against Vanderbilt, who was receiving votes in the AP top 25, Gray had 14 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds. The Manteca, Calif., native closed the weekend with 13 assists, 12 points and nine rebounds on the road at Marquette. It marks the first time in Gray’s career that Gray has notched back-to-back double-doubles. She now has nine double-figure assist games for her career. The 13 and 12 assists by Gray were the two highest single-game assist totals in the ACC so far this season.
Mavunga averaged a double-double in two victories last week for North Carolina. The Indianapolis native began the week with a 20-point, 13-rebound and five-block performance in a win over Coastal Carolina on Thursday.
Mavunga was a perfect 10-for-10 from the field in the game. Mavunga came back Sunday with 14 points and seven rebounds in a victory over Coppin State. She shot 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the floor for the week.
