Blue Devil Sophomore Captures Three Matches, Including Win Over Ninth-Ranked Opponent
GREENSBORO, N.C.-– Duke redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann (Port Orchard, Wash.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week Tuesday for his performance in winning three matches last week for the Blue Devils, including a 7-4 decision over Brandon Palik of Drexel, the nation’s ninth-ranked (InterMat) wrestler at 197 pounds.
Hartmann also keyed Duke’s 38-9 win over VMI with a pin of Andrew Embree in 6:30 and then recorded a major decision over Jeff McElwee of Rider, 17-4, in Duke’s loss to the Broncs.
It was Hartmann’s win over Palik in triple overtime which was his most impressive performance of the week. Hartmann had lost earlier in the year to Palik, 3-2, in the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1. Palik had entered the match with a 13-4 record with three of the losses coming against opponents ranked higher.
Hartmann improved to 15-7 overall on the year, including 10-5 in duals and 2-4 against top 20 opponents.
In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Hartmann was chosen over strong performances from Maryland’s 141-pound sophomore Shyheim Brown (Harrisburg, Pa.) and NC State 285-pound sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.).
