Duke’s Yu Liu, Miami’s Daniela Darquea share honor for month of March
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke freshman Yu Liu and Miami freshmen Daniela Darquea have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Women’s Golfers of the Month following her strong play in a pair of March tournaments.
In two tournaments, Liu carded her first collegiate victory and a third-place finish against impressive fields while notching a 71.83 stroke average. At the Darius Rucker Invitational, Liu totaled rounds of 69, 72 and 70 for a 54-hole winning total of two-under-par, 211. At the Bryan National Collegiate, she notched rounds of 74, 72 and 74 for a four-over-par, 220, to place this in very challenging conditions. In six career collegiate tournaments, Liu has notched six top-10 finishes, becoming just the third Blue Devil to accomplish that feat. Duke won the team title in both events and now owns three team titles on the season.
Miami’s Darquea posted her career-first college tournament victory at the 2014 Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, shooting a career-low 2-under 211. She carded a first-round 68 and ended the tournament with a final-round 71, besting Iowa State’s Sasikarn On-Iam on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to secure her career-first win. Darquea followed up with a second victory at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational, where she erased a seven-stroke deficit with a final-round 67 to finish at 4-over 214. She also tied for 29th overall at the SDSU Farms Invitational at 9-over 225. Darquea leads the Hurricanes with a 72.87 scoring average through eight tournaments and 1.39 score vs. par. She has finished in the top 25 six times, top 15 five times and top 10 four times while owining Miami’s 18-, 36- and 54-hole season lows.
