Syracuse’s Jasmine Watson & Notre Dame’s Laura Winter earn recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Syracuse’s Jasmine Watson has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Notre Dame’s Laura Winter earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Syracuse’s Watson powered the Orange to a 4-2 record for the week, including two critical wins against Virginia Tech - the second place team in the ACC at the time. The victories not only claimed the series, but also clinched a spot in the upcoming ACC Championship. For the week, Watson led the Orange in batting (.467), hits (7), home runs (4), runs batted in (11), on-base percentage (.579) and slugging percentage (1.333). Watson now has 16 home runs on the year, matching the single-season program record, while her 44 RBIs are good for second on the single-season list at Syracuse.
Notre Dame’s Winter posted a perfect 4-0 record in the circle for the Irish, along with a 0.65 ERA, three walks and 28 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. Winter tossed three complete games to open the week, closing the Sunday doubleheader finale against Maryland in relief out of the Irish bullpen. The senior right-hander made program history against Valparaiso last Thursday evening, becoming the first Notre Dame pitcher to surpass the 1,000 career strikeout plateau. Winter, the only pitcher with 100 career wins and 1,000 strikeouts in team history, is just one of two Notre Dame hurlers to win at least 20 decisions (22 in 2014) in all four of her seasons in an Irish uniform during the team’s 26 years at the varsity level.
