Florida State’s Lacey Waldrop and Boston College’s Tory Speer receive recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College catcher Tory Speer has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Florida State pitcher Lacey Waldrop earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Boston College’s Speer powered the Eagles to four victories over the weekend. In five total games, she batted .538 with seven hits in 13 at bats, including four home runs and two doubles, and recorded 10 RBI. In the five games, she posted an on-base percentage of .632 and a slugging percentage of 1.615. She helped Boston College overcome a seven-run deficit against Drake to come back and win 11-8 with a home run and a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Speer started at catcher all five games.
Florida State’s Waldrop continued her early season success, as she received her second Pitcher of the Week award. In two games this week, the junior stymied opponents by throwing 13.0 innings and allowing only eight hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks, while posting 24 strikeouts. Against UCF on February 19, Waldrop fanned a season-high 14 batters, including a stretch of five in a row at one point and seven of the final 11 batters she faced. She followed that up with a complete game, 10-strikeout and zero-walk performance against UC Santa Barbara, which marked the third straight game that Waldrop has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game. Her performances lowered her overall ERA to 0.57, and batters are only hitting .183 against her on the season.
