Clemson’s Wilkerson, Virginia’s McCarthy, Florida State’s Weaver recognized
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson senior infielder Steve Wilkerson and Virginia sophomore outfielder Joe McCarthy have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week, while Florida State junior Luke Weaver received ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Wilkerson led the Tigers to a 3-0 record by going 6-for-11 (.545) with five doubles, one home run, three RBIs, four runs, and one walk. The Roswell, Ga., native posted a 1.273 slugging percentage and had a .583 on-base percentage as Clemson won at Georgia, 16-4, and swept two games at No. 25 Maryland. All six of Wilkerson’s hits went for extra bases.
The Cavaliers posted a 5-0 week that featured four conference wins. McCarthy, a native of Scranton, Pa., had hits in all five games and went 5-for-11 (.455) with seven RBIs in a three-game sweep of Virginia Tech. McCarthy scored the game-winning runs in both the Friday and Saturday wins over the Hokies, and went 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs while falling a triple shy of the cycle in Saturday’s victory. McCarthy tripled in a pair of runs in the first inning of the Sunday game versus the Hokies, leading the way to an eventual 7-4 Virginia win.
Florida State’s Weaver threw a one-hit shutout as the Seminoles blanked Boston College, 6-0, in the first game of a doubleheader last Friday afternoon. Weaver kept the Eagles off-balance while tossing his first career complete game and the third by a Florida State pitcher this season. The DeLand, Fla., native walked just two batters while striking out four, and was working on a no-hitter until the Eagles’ Chris Shaw dropped a two-out bloop single into left field in bottom of the seventh. Weaver, who retired 12 consecutive batters between the third and seventh innings, closed the game by retiring seven consecutive batters on three strikeouts, three groundouts and a flyout.
