Wake Forest’s Craig, Miami’s Salas recognized
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest freshman third baseman Will Craig has been named the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Miami senior Javi Salas has been selected as the Pitcher of the Week.
Craig had a huge week offensively for the Demon Deacons, hitting .615 on the week with eight hits in 13 at-bats. He compiled five RBIs, two home runs, four walks, and only struck out twice to lead Wake Forest to a 3-1 week, including a series victory at Georgia Tech.
A native of Johnson City, Tenn., Craig is currently on a 10-game hitting streak and has reached base in each of the last 11 games. He ranks fifth in the league in batting average at .375, second in slugging percentage at .604, and is tied for second with three home runs on the season.
Salas threw just the 23rd perfect game in NCAA history (since 1957) on Tuesday against Villanova. Striking out six Wildcat batters, Salas needed 113 pitches to complete the game for a 17-0 Miami win.
The performance was the third perfect game by an ACC pitcher in league history and the first since Virginia’s Will Roberts in 2011. Salas, a native of Coral Gables, Fla., is the second Hurricane to accomplish the feat (Kevin Sheary, 1987). The game marked the second no-hitter by an ACC pitcher in less than a week after Maryland’s Jake Stinnett faced two over the minimum on March 1.
