GT’s Davis receives ACC Rookie of the Week honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior forward Uju Ugoka has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Georgia Tech freshman guard Kaela Davis earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted on by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Ugoka averaged 25.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, while shooting 63.9 percent from the floor in a 1-1 week for Virginia Tech. Ugoka recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 32 points and 11 rebounds in the Hokies’ Big Ten/ACC Challenge game at Indiana, and 19 points and 10 rebounds in their win over No. 25 Michigan State.
Against Indiana, Ugoka scored 13 straight points to help Virginia Tech climb from a 19-point second-half deficit to come within three points in the final minutes of the game. The senior from Lagos, Nigeria, is just the fifth women’s basketball player at Virginia Tech to tally 30-plus points and 10-plus rebounds in a single game. This is Ugoka’s second player of the week honor of her career.
Davis averaged 22.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Yellow Jackets, including a win over Illinois in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Davis set new season highs in points (29) and rebounds (14) in Georgia Tech’s victory against Alabama A&M, and tied an ACC single-game high of seven 3-pointers, which also ranks second on Georgia Tech’s individual single game list. Davis leads all ACC freshmen with 19.8 points per game.
The Rookie of the Week honor is her second of the season. Davis last earned the honor on November 11.
Complete release will be available this afternoon.
