ACC Tennis Players of the Week Announced

NC State’s Norenius, Miami’s Wagner and Clemson’s Eidukonyte earn honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. ( – NC State’s Simon Norenius has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Clemson’s Joana Eidukonyte and Miami’s Stephanie Wagner have been named this week’s ACC Women’s Tennis co-Players of the Week.

NC State’s Norenius posted a singles and doubles victory in the Wolfpack’s upset victory over No. 25 Wake Forest Saturday afternoon. Norenius and teammate Austin Powell completed the sweep for State with an 8-7 (3) victory against Anthony Delcore and Adam Lee. In singles, Norenius helped turn the momentum after Wake Forest took a 2-1 lead with one of three 3-set victories for the Pack with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory against the No. 71-ranked Lee. The victory assisted the Wolfpack in earning the No. 6 seed in the ACC Championships, whereas a loss would have put NC State as the No. 9 seed in this week’s Championship.

Wagner went 2-0 at No. 1 singles with a win against 3rd-ranked Julia Elbaba on Sunday that helped Miami clinch a share of the ACC regular season championship. After the losing the first set, Wagner got off to a 5-0 start in the second, turning the momentum of the entire match. Wagner won the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-2 to earn the key victory. In doubles, Wagner went 1-0 with a win against Virginia Tech’s Rebecca Harris and Laura Ramthun by an 8-0 score. 

Eidukonyte played a key role on the way to the Tigers claiming of a share of the ACC regular-season championship. The freshman from Vilnius, Lithuania, faced a 5-3 deficit in the second set versus Marianne Jodoin of Duke, but came back to win a three-and-a-half hour match by claiming 10 straight games to clinch Clemson’s first win over a top-ranked team. She also defeated Tessa Lyons of North Carolina, 6-3, 6-0, in tying Clemson’s match with No. 7 UNC, 3-3, after the team trailed 3-0. With Rompies, she won both of her doubles matches. Eidukonyte is 14-5 on the year (6-1 ACC), and has won nine of her last 10 singles matches overall.
