Virginia Tech’s Amerigo Contini and Miami’s Stephanie Wagner earn recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech’s Amerigo Contini has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Miami’s Stephanie Wagner was named ACC Female Player of the Week.
Virginia Tech’s Contini went undefeated in singles on the week as the Hokies tallied a 2-1 record, defeating No. 48 VCU and No. 23 Wake Forest. In the first match of the week, Contini helped the Hokies seal the 5-2 win over VCU, picking up a point in the No. 1 singles by defeating No. 64 Alexis Heugas, 7-5, 6-1. The Hokies claimed a hard-fought 4-3 win later in the week against No. 23 Wake Forest. The deciding point came down to Contini’s match against No. 34 Romain Bogaerts. Contini overcame a 4-1 deficit in the opening set to win, 6-4. Bogaerts then grabbed the second set, 7-5, before Contini used a late break to take the final set, 7-5, securing the team win. In the Hokies’ final match of the week, Contini defeated No. 52 Austin Powell of NC State. Falling 7-6 (7-5) in the opening set, Contini came back strong to take the next two 6-3, 6-1.
Miami’s Wagner helped the Hurricanes to a 2-0 mark in ACC play, as they defeated No. 45 Florida State (6-1) and No. 15 Clemson (4-3). Wagner compiled a 2-0 mark in singles play during the week, along with a 1-0 record in doubles. Against No. 46 Yana Koroleva of Clemson, Wagner notched a straight set victory (7-5, 6-2) for her 17th win of the season. Wagner also avenged a previous loss to Florida State’s Daneika Borthwick with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (3) win.
