Clemson’s Dominique Maden and Virginia’s Julia Elbaba earn recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson’s Dominique Maden has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Julia Elbaba was named ACC Female Player of the Week.
Clemson’s Maden was undefeated on the weekend, going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play, with three of the four victories coming against ranked opponents. In singles, Maden recorded a three-set comeback win over No. 40 Ryan Shane of Virginia on Friday followed by a straight-set victory over No. 120 Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech on Sunday. In doubles play, Maden and teammate Hunter Harrington clinched the doubles point for the Tigers with an 8-7 (7-3) win over Virginia’s top doubles team, and went on to defeat Virginia Tech’s 64th-ranked doubles duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini, 8-4. Maden is 13-3 in dual singles matches and 16-1 in dual doubles matches on the season.
Virginia’s Elbaba, who garnered Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, led the Cavaliers to victories over No. 15 Clemson and No. 27 Georgia Tech. Elbaba finished the week with a 2-0 mark in singles play that included two straight set victories at the No. 1 singles position. Against the Tigers, Elbaba dispatched No. 46 Yana Koroleva, 6-4, 6-4. Against the Jackets, the sophomore from Oyster Bay, N.Y., defeated Kendal Woodard, 6-3, 6-4. Elbaba, the No. 3 single player in the country, has won five straight singles matches.
