Virginia Tech’s Andreas Bjerrejus & North Carolina’s Jamie Loeb earn recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech’s Andreas Bjerrejus has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Male Tennis Player of the Week, while North Carolina’s Jamie Loeb was named ACC Female Player of the Week.
Tech’s Bjerrehus picked up wins in both singles and doubles on the weekend, as the No. 54 Hokies defeated No. 24 Florida State, 5-2 and No. 39 Miami, 6-1. Against FSU, Bjerrehus teamed up with Hunter Koontz to take down the 41st-ranked tandem of Dominic Cotrone and Blake Davis, 8-5. Bjerrehus followed that up with a 6-4, 7-6(6) win over No. 65 Cristian Gonzalez Mendez in the No. 2 singles. In the Miami match, Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini paired up to defeat Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto 8-3 in the No. 1 doubles match. Bjerrehus also claimed a straight set win in No. 2 singles, defeating Soto, 6-4, 6-1.
North Carolina’s Loeb, the top ranked singles player in the country, led the Tar Heels to a 3-0 week that included victories against ranked opponents No. 9 Northwestern and No. 59 Syracuse. Against Northwestern, Loeb scored a straight set victory against No. 36 Veronica Corning. In a victory against Pitt, the freshman from Ossining, N.Y. scored a win against No. 114 Audrey Ann Blakely. Loeb’s three singles wins moved her record to 40-2 overall and 9-0 in the ACC. In addition, Loeb teamed with Hayley Carter to notch a doubles victory in UNC’s 7-0 win against the Orange. The duo, ranked third in the country, own a 27-3 doubles record, including 6-0 in ACC play.
