Virginia’s Mitchell Frank and Danielle Collins earn honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Mitchell Frank has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Danielle Collins was named ACC Female Player of the Week.
In leading the Cavalier men to a 2-0 week that included a pair of top-15 road wins that helped Virginia stay unbeaten in ACC play, Frank recorded two singles victories over ranked opponents. Against No. 6 North Carolina, Frank defeated No. 32 Ronnie Schneider 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. In a 5-1 victory over No. 13 Duke, Frank knocked off No. 40 Jason Tahir, 6-3, 7-6 (5), to clinch the team victory for the Cavaliers. In addition, Frank, along with teammate Alex Domijan, added an 8-5 doubles win against the Tar Heels.
Collins, who earned Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week, helped lead the Virginia women to a 2-0 week that included a 6-1 victory over No. 22 Notre Dame. In singles play, the sophomore from St. Petersburg, Fla., notched two victories over ranked opponents (No. 57 Quinn Gleason of Notre Dame and No. 86 Audrey Ann Blakely of Pitt). Collins’ victory over Gleason was the clinching win against the Fighting Irish. Additionally, Collins registered a doubles victory in each dual match. For the season, Collins owns a 21-9 record in singles play.
