Duke’s Jason Tahir & Syracuse Maddie Kobelt earn honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Jason Tahir has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Syracuse’s Maddie Kobelt was named ACC Female Player of the Week.
Duke’s Tahir led the Blue Devils in their win over No. 19 NC State. The junior from Rochester, N.Y., won his eighth consecutive match in singles while picking up a win over No. 91 Robbie Mudge (his fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season). His singles win extended Duke’s lead to 2-0 in the match and moved his dual match ledger to 8-2. Tahir and Michael Redlicki, the nation’s 33rd-ranked duo, edged No. 42 Mudge/Dempster of NC State in the No. 1 doubles contest to improve to 7-3 overall and 4-2 at the No. 1 spot.
Kobelt continued her stellar play since entering the ACC with two more overall wins in Syracuse’s upset victory of nationally-ranked No. 25 Florida State. Despite the Orange losing the doubles point, Kobelt and her partner freshman Valeria Salazar won 8-5 at first doubles to improve to 3-1 in the ACC.
The New Albany, Ohio native cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Seminoles Kerrie Cartwright at No. 1 singles to help set the tone for Syracuse in singles action as the Orange took 4-of-6, including the final three finishes to rally and defeat the Seminoles. With eight wins so far on the 2014 campaign, Kobelt is up to 97 career wins and is just three shy of becoming the 30th member of the Century Club at Syracuse.
