Florida State’s Dominic Cotrone and Miami’s Stephanie Wagner recieve recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State’s Dominic Cotrone has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Male Tennis Player of the Week, while Miami’s Stephanie Wagner was named ACC Female Player of the Week.
Returning to the court for the first time in two weeks, No. 112 Dominic Cotrone led the Seminoles to an ACC win over No. 42 Georgia Tech (6-1) and a nonconference victory over Florida Atlantic. The junior from Bradenton, Fla., won both of his singles matches in straight sets. In his first match of the conference season, Cotrone opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt. Ranked No. 51 in doubles play, he and Blake Davis teamed up to upset the No. 15 team of Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura of Georgia Tech, 8-6. With Blake Davis out of the line-up for FAU, Cotrone teamed up with Michael Rinaldi for the first time since September and won 8-1.
Miami’s Wagner returned to dominant form this week, going posting an overall record of 4-0 in the first weekend of ACC action. Playing at the No. 2 spot in the ACC-opener against Maryland, the sophomore from Amberg, Germany, cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win after a dominant 8-0 performance in doubles. Two days later against No. 22 Notre Dame, Wagner won her doubles match 8-5 and then returned to the No. 1 singles position to beat No. 99 Britney Sanders, 6-3, 6-3.
